Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School to be Recognized by City of Lauderdale Lakes on 30th Anniversary
January 26, 2016 to be designated “FLPS Day”

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL (January 22, 2016) — Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School is pleased to announce that they are being honored as they celebrate 30 years of educating South Florida students. FLPS, located at 3275 West Oakland Park Boulevard, will be recognized by the Lauderdale Lakes mayor, vice mayor and city commissioners at the Tuesday, January 26 commission meeting. Mayor Barrington A. Russell, Sr. will be signing an official proclamation designating January 26, 2016 as Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School Day.

Established at their current location since 1986, FLPS offers a traditional college prep education to students from Pre-K through 12th grade, in a supportive environment that recognizes each student as a unique individu- al. Founder and school director Anita Lonstein notes, “I have seen so many changes in education over the last 30 years – from curriculum updates to the advent of computers and the internet as successful teaching tools – but one thing hasn’t changed, our commitment to our students. Our teachers and staff work to instill a life- long love of learning and this concept has helped almost 500 graduating students go on to become successful and productive members of their communities. We are so honored that the City of Lauderdale Lakes is recognizing our commitment.”

As a private, family-owned school, FLPS works to keep class size small so that every student gets individual attention. This devotion to academic excellence translates into 98% of their graduating students being accepted into colleges across the country. In addition, FLPS has met the criteria of an A-rated school for the last 25 years, and holds 7 accreditations including AdvancedED, NWAC, NIPSA, NCPSA, MSA-CESS, NCA-CASI, and SACS-CASI.

Alternative Education Program

The difference between school and life? In school you’re taught a lesson and then given a test. In life you’re given a test that teaches you a lesson.

– Tom Bodett

FLPS alternativeAt Fort Lauderdale Prep School alternative education is more of a perspective than a program. It is built upon the beliefs that there are many varied ways to become educated through different structures. To accomplish this we provide a variety of strategies and options. Each student can find a “path” that is comfortable to facilitate individual learning and progress. At our school the heart of our alternative education success are our teachers.

Large and/or traditional school environments are becoming less effective for increasing numbers of students. Research shows this is especially true for vulnerable and disengaged students.

At Fort Lauderdale Prep School our Alternative Education program is designed to meet the needs of students who are not succeeding in the traditional setting. Students are provided with a variety of options that can lead to graduation and are supported by services essential to success.

Students are finding success at Fort Lauderdale Prep School in our smaller alternative education program that attempts to integrate learning and meaningful work and training. Our program creates sustained, family-like support systems of peers and caring adults. We develop an “opportunity structure” by setting rigorous standards and high expectations for students. Most importantly, we focus on developing and transforming the whole person by demonstrating respect for individual abilities and the opportunity to contribute to the community.

While our short-term goals are to help each student achieve their full academic potential, our long-term goals are to teach them to identify the successful alternative education strategies that are needed to succeed and how to use these strategies as a basis for improving learning opportunities now and in the future.

Some of the components of our program include:

  • Low teacher/student ratio
  • Small student base
  • Clearly stated mission and discipline code
  • Caring faculty with continual staff development
  • School staff having high expectations for student achievement
  • Learning program specific to the student’s expectations and learning style
  • Total commitment to have each student be a success.

Life Skills Program

Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

– Rita Pierson

FLPS skillsAt Fort Lauderdale Prep School our approach to learning in our Life Skills Program is to instruct and challenge our students to go beyond what they have previously been asked to do in a creative, supportive and caring atmosphere.

Life Skills are essential to living in the real world.  Teaching these skills is not only important, but necessary.  Living independently is a need we all have, no matter how old we are.  Unfortunately, many special needs students do not pick up these skills automatically.

Understanding the language that is comprised of  daily activities is probably the key to achieving any kind of independence.  Comprehending vocabulary opens closed doors.  Following directions, knowing what is expected in situations, understanding information, making decisions, and planning a course of action are vital to being able to live even partially independent.

Fort Lauderdale Prep School’s Life Skills Program is designed to expose your child to become an independent person within the limits of his/or capabilities.  We get to know our students, show them how much they matter and support them in their growth.. We stay in close communication with parents because it is so important that what we teach and practice and discuss is transferred to home life.  By keeping parents informed of what is being studied the same plan can be reinforced at home.  If the lines of communication are open and we all are on the same page, your child benefits.

Our curriculum is designed so that we practice and work on daily living language and practical real life situations.

We incorporate hands on and various modalities of instruction very successfully.

To learn more, please call to schedule an appointment to meet with one of our learning coordinators.

Supportive Learning Environment

“When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look into the reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like lettuce.”

Thich Nhat Hanh, 1991

k8For some students a supportive learning environment is needed to succeed in school. Often, students have the knowledge and skills to meet curriculum demands, but their difficulties with attention, impulsivity, activity level, organizing and planning prevent them from performing consistently.

At Fort Lauderdale Prep School our small classes, nurturing and caring environment and individual approach to students provides the right environment for that success.

The key to a supportive classroom environment is a teacher who is willing to establish a caring relationship with each student, learn about a student’s individual needs and strengths, and provide the support and encouragement each student needs to be a successful learner. They also need teachers who are flexible and willing to try new ways to teach and assess. Along with flexibility, these students need teachers with high expectations who believe that all students are capable of learning and doing well.

There are a number of proactive strategies we use to create the correct physical environment of the classroom to reduce distractions and facilitate supervision.

  • Seat student near teacher’s desk or in the area of the class where the teacher spends most of the time.
  • Surround the student with other students who are good role models.
  • Avoid distracting stimuli. Try not to place the student near air conditioners, heaters, high traffic areas, doors, windows or pencil sharpeners.
  • Provide a stimuli-reduced study area accessible to all students. For example, set up an “office area” using a study carrel or a cardboard screen to provide students with a quiet place for uninterrupted work time.

All students, but especially students in need of a supportive nurturing learning environment to succeed benefit from clearly established classroom rules, behavioral expectations and routines.

Autism/Asperger’s

Fort Lauderdale Prep School (FLP) is a regular school that has a small program (within the school) for students who are in need of something more than is available in a traditional public or private school. There is an enormous unmet educational need for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. FLP can provide these services and give your son or daughter a safe education and social environment.

How children learn on the Autism Spectrum Disorder and why Fort Lauderdale Prep School is the best private school for them

In recent years, more and more children have been diagnosed with autism or autistic spectrum disorders, including high-functioning autism or Asperger’s Syndrome. Additionally, students who are non-verbal generally need special-education settings.

How Autism Spectrum Disorder Students Learn

These students are gifted in particular areas, and are quite bright. They may show talents such as a well-developed vocabulary or the high level ability to do math. Autism Spectrum Disorder kids often also have an area of great interest, which may be in a narrow area, such as subway cars or certain kinds of animals. However, they need a great deal of structure and routine, and sometimes react negatively to changes in schedules. They tend to have trouble making transitions, and they usually need advanced warning when their schedules are going to change. Sensory issues that make them sensitive to loud noises or to smells or textures are also indications that have to be considered. Many students with Autism Spectrum Disorder have difficulty communicating about their wants and needs. Even though their vocabularies may be sophisticated, they may struggle with the practical aspects of language. We provide the understanding to help.

Which Accommodations Autism Spectrum Disorder Students Need

While Autism Spectrum Disorder students are often bright, they usually need accommodations or modifications in their curriculum or classroom, including changes that are reflected in their Individual Education Plan, (IEP). At Fort Lauderdale Prep, we provide the students with learning issues or other disabilities, the accommodations and modifications, which are necessary for these students to handle the curriculum and to succeed. We give these students the opportunity to be able to enjoy learning in a safe environment. Our support is there for them.

What is the Best Placement for Students with Autism Disorder/Asperger Syndrome?

Autism Spectrum Disorder/Asperger Syndrome students thrive at Fort Lauderdale Prep School. Some students may also need additional services such as counseling or occupational or speech and language therapy which can be provided outside of school. While they are with us, FLP meets the needs of these students. Our safe and caring environment encourages trust and comfort and enhances the socialization process.

We require parents to visit the school with the child to make sure that the school can offer the right academic program. Being a small school by design we offer a lot of individualized instruction to meet the needs of a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In other words, we offer a student a higher-level class in an area in which he or she excels, while still providing a warm structured environment to help students improve their ability to interact with other children and teachers. With these types of services, our students are very successful .

We look forward to meeting with you and your child and getting to know you personally.

Thank you for considering Fort Lauderdale Prep School.

(Visiting) Winter Students

Fort Lauderdale Prep School accepts winter/spring or ‘vacation’ students.

Many families find themselves in South Florida for work or vacation for an extended period of time.  At Fort Lauderdale Prep (FLP) we can provide a friendly, safe and enriching learning environment for short-term students.

If growing a student’s English skill is a priority – nothing is better than immersion in a small environment. Students who are with us from one to several months are integrated into our student body and quickly become part of our ‘small school’ family. We can complete work sent by a home school or furnish students with appropriate level schoolwork. Grades and/or academic performance summaries can be prepared for students to take home with them.

Our visiting student population has created countless new long distance friendships. We view this added program as a wonderful opportunity for our students to view the world in a broader way and to embrace new people and cultures around the world.
