Fort Lauderdale Prep School Student Angela Skidmore Wins First Place, National Letters about Literature Competition

Ft. Lauderdale, FL (June 18, 2012) Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School (FLPS), a private Pre-K thru 12th school located at 3275 W. Oakland Park Boulevard, proudly announces that Angela Nicole Skidmore has been awarded first place in Florida for the Level 3 (high school) Letters about Literature national competition.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress holds a national writing contest called Letters About Literature for students in grades 4 through 12. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre — fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, contemporary or classic — explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for children in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8, and Level III, grades 9 – 12.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress received 59,000 total entries this year of which just 4,000 advanced to the round 3 state judging phase. Students from the State of Florida were responsible for 1,221 of the total entries.

Angela, who has attended Fort Lauderdale Prep School since she was 5 years old and is now an 11th grade student, received first place in Florida for her letter to Amelia Atwater Rhodes author of In the Forests of the Night.

“We are so proud of Angela” says Mrs. Lonstein, Director of Fort Lauderdale Prep School.  “We have watched her mature over the last 11 years into the thoughtful writer, strong student and avid reader that she is today.  She has been a joy to educate!”

Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School, established in 1986, is a nationally recognized educational institution serving Pre-K through 12th grade and is accredited by SACS, NIPSA, MSA-CESS, and NCPSA. FLPS students receive a college prep, classical, liberal arts education, designed to fit individual needs and learning behaviors. FLPS is small by design and has been educating South Florida students for more than thirty years. The school accepts a variety of scholarships including McKay, Step Up for Students, VPK and Family Central, and also offers their own in-house financial assistance to students in need. The school’s mission includes helping young people to develop self-discipline, love of learning, and service to others.
