Transitions

Every child deserves a champion – an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.

At Fort Lauderdale Prep School our approach to learning in our Transitions Program is to instruct and challenge our students to go beyond what they have previously been asked to do in a creative, supportive and caring atmosphere.

These skills are essential to living in the real world.  Teaching these skills is not only important, but also necessary.  Living independently is a need we all have, no matter how old we are.  Unfortunately, many special needs students do not pick up these skills automatically.

Understanding the language that is comprised of daily activities is probably the key to achieving any kind of independence.  Comprehending vocabulary opens closed doors.  Following directions, knowing what is expected in situations, understanding information, making decisions, and planning a course of action are vital to being able to live even partially independent.

Fort Lauderdale Prep School’s Transitions Program is designed to expose your child to become an independent person within the limits of his/or capabilities.  We get to know our students, show them how much they matter and support them in their growth.. We stay in close communication with parents because it is so important that what we teach and practice and discuss is transferred to home life.  By keeping parents informed of what is being studied the same plan can be reinforced at home.  If the lines of communication are open and we all are on the same page, your child benefits.

Our curriculum is designed so that we practice and work on daily living language and practical real life situations. We incorporate hands on and various modalities of instruction very successfully.
