Ft. Lauderdale, FL (June 18, 2012) Fort Lauderdale Preparatory School (FLPS), a private Pre-K thru 12th school located at 3275 W. Oakland Park Boulevard, proudly announces that Angela Nicole Skidmore has been awarded first place in Florida for the Level 3 (high school) Letters about Literature national competition.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress holds a national writing contest called Letters About Literature for students in grades 4 through 12. To enter, readers write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, from any genre — fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, contemporary or classic — explaining how that author’s work changed the student’s way of thinking about the world or themselves. There are three competition levels: Level I for children in grades 4 through 6; Level II for grades 7 and 8, and Level III, grades 9 – 12.

The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress received 59,000 total entries this year of which just 4,000 advanced to the round 3 state judging phase. Students from the State of Florida were responsible for 1,221 of the total entries.

Angela, who has attended Fort Lauderdale Prep School since she was 5 years old and is now an 11^th grade student, received first place in Florida for her letter to Amelia Atwater Rhodes author of In the Forests of the Night.

Three FLPS students have been chosen for this prestigious award given annually to private and parochial students nominated by their school. To be nominated students must demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, community service, and citizenship; and excel in fine arts, athletics or student activities. Perseverance, effort, dedication, commitment to positive goals, and improvement in personal performance or attitude are also considered in the nomination process.

Dasheny Monestime – Grade 5

Dasheny is being honored with the Pinnacle Award for her fine character, her genuine concern for others and her stronge academic achievements. Dasheny is always ready to help her classmates and is a member of the FLPS Elementary Honor Society.

Richard Skidmore – Grade 11

FLPS is proud to nominate Richard Skidmore for a Pinnacle Award. In many ways Richard personifies the attributes of this fine award.  Richard has been a student at Fort Lauderdale Prep for 12 years and his many accomplishments could fill an entire page. He is a National Honor Society multi-year recipient, a respected member of the student body, a trusted school ambassador and a caring student mentor to our younger students. Over the years his teachers have expressed the joy that it has been to teach him and to watch as he has grown into an articulate, thoughtful gentleman.

Helton Sutherland – Grad 10

Helton is being honored with the Pinnacle Award winner for his consistent excellent effort, high academic achievements and gentle, well-mannered ways. He has been a student at Fort Lauderdale Prep School for over 10 years and is known for always giving a 110% effort on anything he does. Helton sets high goals for himself and achieves top grades. As an ongoing member of the FLPS National Honor Society he is both a gentlemen and a scholar. As a student aide to our elementary students, he has been a wonderful role model to others.

Student recognized for leadership and commitment to community

Gabriella began attending FLPS as a first grader in 2002 and is currently a sophomore. She is an excellent student and is very well liked by her peers. Gabriella routinely makes Honor Roll and was a National Junior Honor Society inductee. Outstanding Students Recognized for Achievement inside and outside the Classroom

Donald Leonard Smith, Jr. has received the HOBY Award for Excellence and Brian Israel Tacher has received the Broward County Nonpublic School Association Pinnacle Scholar Award.

Donald, who began attending FLPS in the fourth grade, is currently a sophomore and has flourished academically since his arrival. Well recognized by FLPS and his peers, Donald has succeeded in and outside of school as he is currently a member of the National Honor Society, is the highest academic achiever in the tenth grade, and has demonstrated unprecedented leadership skills. FLPS chose to nominate Donald for the HOBY Award because of his commitment to the school community and his outstanding academic performance.

Brian Israel Tacher, a 2010 graduate, was named eighth-grade Valedictorian in his first year of enrollment at FLPS. A member of the National Honor Society, Brian was also awarded the Florida International Book Award, the Bright Futures Award, and the Florida Medallion Scholar (FMS) Award, and was a  HOBY winner in his sophomore year. Having graduated this year, Brian was named Senior Valedictorian and was given the Pinnacle Scholar Award for Excellence for his commitment to community service. Brian completed his community service by serving as a computer lab tutor to the lower school students within his own FLPS community. He received straight A’s and has one of the highest GPAs in his grade.

The Broward County Nonpublic School Association Pinnacle Award recognizes exemplary students who set an example for others to follow in their actions in the home, the school, or the community. They excel in one or more of these areas: academics, community service, citizenship, fine arts, athletics, students activities, perseverance, effort, dedication, commitment to positive goals, improvement in performance, and attitude.
